Travelling to the race

Kuta Mandalika is located on the southern tip of Lombok, which is primarily located close to the airport within a 20-minute drive to the small town and adjacent Mandalika Street Circuit Track.

Guide to getting to Kuta Lombok here.

Currently, only domestic flights are accessing the island via significant cities such as Surabaya, Jakarta, or Bali. All are within a short flight distance; we hope that international airline traffic shall resume for the event.

Other key options for accommodation during the event would be Mataram, an hour and a half drive, or Senggigi, a short distance further and more tailored to tourism. At the same time, Mataram is the capital city of the island.

See best beaches in Lombok here.

It may also be worth looking at other smaller towns such as Praya and others for more basic simple homestay accommodation closer to the event.

The local town of Kuta, where Villa Amani is located, has all the resources and amenities you need, including excellent restaurants, supermarkets, and many other things to do. We expect large amounts of traffic during the lead up to and during the race weekend so ensure you are prepared.

The Villa Amani is perfectly located in KUTA Lombok which allows for the best access to all of South Lombok’s beaches and beauty spots.

Segar Beach
This speech is good for intermediate to experience surfers and is a great place to marvel at the surrounding scenery and very popular to watch the sunset.

Certain sections of this beach are okay for swimming when the tide is high but generally it is quite rocky.

It is easily accessible from the town of Kuta and along the main beach are a number of small restaurants and bars.

Novotel Beach
A great option for families or just chilling out the beach in front of the Novotel is a very flat lagoon with no swell at all so perfect for children or just relaxing.  Due to the fact that it is on the rivermouth the water is not particularly clean but nonetheless it is a nice place to get a cabana and relax for the day.

You can usually buy a pass for the day or the week from the Novotel where are you can use all of their facilities and get a discount on food and beverage.

Distance from Amani 8 Mins

Tanjung Ann
A must see in Lombok and one of our favourites, this white sand horseshoe beach with views of the Bukit Merese is truly world class.  A great place for beginner surfers and longboards you can rent boats or instructors from one of the many beach cafes to take you out to the breaks around 500 metres offshore.

Warung Turtle is our favourite spot for relaxing with a coconut or beer and the seafood is also very good here, sometimes if you want lobsters and prawns its best to book in advance.

Distance from Amani 15 Mins

Kuta Mandalika
The local Kuta Beach that has been redeveloped by the government is a long white sand beach with large walking path, toilets and facilities lining the beachfront. It’s a good place to swim as there are no currents and although the development is quite new once it grows out I’m sure it will be a popular place due to its proximity to town. It’s popular with kite surfers and kayakers due to the lagoon nature of the beachfront.

A lovely bay the other side of Tanjung Ann that offers five surf spots for varying levels of surfer from beginner to advanced. From the village of Gerupuk you can jump on a local boat for a few dollars that shall take you to the breaks and wait while you surf,  the team at Amani can assist in arranging tours and boats.

Best beaches in Kuta Lombok

Great in the dry season and caters for the experienced surfer,  somewhat secluded and not a lot with regards to food and drinks other than basic noodles and soft drinks.  Nice drive to access through the hills and forest areas of the forestry areas, we wouldn’t recommend swimming due to the strong currents and isolated location.

Best coffee spots in Kuta Lombok

Indonesia produces some of the worlds best coffee. With its mix of local and international expats and tourists Lombok is a destination that loves its coffee!

Lombok itself is a major producer of coffee in Indonesia both for domestic and export usage, many of the coffee shops around town use locally produced or barley produced coffee beans and they are divine.

If you have some spare time while in Lombok we highly recommend you go up north near the volcano and visit some of the plantations and try for yourself some of the freshly roasted beans.

Here are a few of our favourite spot for good coffee and good times.

Coffee in Kuta Lombok

Kopi Local!

If you really want the truth Indonesian experience and that racy robusta kick in the morning then you’ll have to seek out the coffee lady who moves around town roasting beans for all that crave them.  An intense flavour very smoky and definitely unique this coffee is usually drank black or with condensed milk and is a go to the local labourers, fisherman and truck drivers.  Your best chances in finding the local coffee makers are along the beachfront or local markets early in the morning.

The best Espresso Kuta Lombok

Milk Espresso

It’s been closed for awhile during the pandemic but is about to reopen and if anything like before will be excellent. The owners have a long experience in running Cafes in Australia and this venue is spectacular, great coffee, great food and a real central meeting point for the whole town.

Bush Radio

Favourite of ours for the morning the team at Busch radio know their stuff when it comes to coffee and have a fantastic snack style menu to enjoy while you have your coffee.

It’s a popular spot with people working online and meeting up before or after a surf.

Coffee in Kuta Lombok

The Breakery

The bakery not only delivers spectacular French baking but also a well priced and good range of coffee, again this is one of the very popular meeting places in the morning and opens around 6 am.

Travelling to and from Kuta Lombok

Ten years ago Lombok was only served by a number of flights from Jakarta and Bali and the local network of ferries, fast boats and charter boats.

With a massive push from central government into Lombok tourism and the addition of the International Mandalika Street circuit we have seen a huge increase in accessibility to the island.

Getting to Lombok from within Indonesia and outside Indonesia has never been easier and it looks like it’s getting better.

Prior to the Covid pandemic international flights were extending on a monthly basis to the new Lombok International Airport which is located 25 minutes away from the town of Kuta and Villa Amani.

We have summarised a list of transport essentials for you when planning your journey, please bear in mind that some of these roots and itineraries may be affected by COVID-19 restrictions so check first with your embassy or travel agent.

Travelling to Kuta Lombok

By Air

Lombok now has an International Airport and prior to the pandemic was welcoming flights from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Qatar and mainland China.

Most of these international flights were operating on a daily basis and we hope for them to resume shortly.

Airlines serving Lombok airport up until the pandemic were AirAsia, Garuda, Singapore Airlines, Malaysian airlines, tiger hair and Virgin blue.

A common way to get to Lombok is also to fly via Jakarta or Bali and take a connecting domestic flight onwards which takes between 30 and 1.5 hours.

There are a range of domestic airlines in Indonesia however we suggest using the national flag carrier Garuda as they are generally on time, have a better service experience and better international connections.

Domestic rates have continued throughout the pandemic and see tens of flights a day now coming from Jakarta, Bali, Surabaya, Jogja and other key Indonesian cities.

Villa Kuta Lombok

By Sea

Indonesia has a good network of local ferries which you can travel on by foot, car or public transport. The ferries leave from Bali and neighbouring islands such as some Baauer into Lombok and times vary depending on weather and tidal conditions.  Ferry is an inexpensive way to travel and definitely an experience, if you intend to drive from BALI this is your only option.

Travelling to Kuta Lombok

When in Lombok

Travelling in Lombok with public transport is very limited so we always suggest that you either self drive on a bike or car or rent a car and driver for the duration of your trip which can be arranged by the team at Villa Amani.

When in Kuta the easiest way to travel is using a motorcycle or car be sure to carry an international driving license in case you get stopped by the police.  Oh babe they are less aggressive than the police in Bali where there are far more road users.

Continue from Lombok

Lombok is a great staging post to explore the other islands in the southern archipelago such as Sumba, Sumbawa and Flores.

It is possible to take ferries on bikes or cars from Lombok and also there are a number of domestic flights leaving from Lombok to other islands.
