Surfing in Lombok is one of the key reasons the island has become so popular in recent years: crystal-clear water, excellent swell, and uncrowded breaks for all levels of surfers.
Surfing in Lombok
There are too many locations in Lombok to list in order to serve everyone, but the majority of waves are found on the island’s southern and south-western sides. Some great waves are also found in the north around Sengiggi and Gili Trawangan but depend on conditions and swell.
The south boasts numerous beaches close by the town of Kuta, including Air Guling, Seger, Tanjung Ann, Mawi, and Gerupuk.
Further along the coast, you have countless waves of varying degrees of difficulty all the way up to the world-class wave at Dessert Point.
While Dessert Point is often accessed via boat, the other waves in Lombok are easily accessible by car or bike, although some require a bit of a drive, but you’re rewarded by often empty conditions.
Lombok’s best surfing season
You can surf in Lombok all year, and there are many different options, from beach breaks to point breaks that work in all conditions; we recommend simply checking the magic seaweed before you go out.
Intermediate to expert surfers The wet or rainy season is generally the best time to visit between October and April, but conditions are great all year round; we just need to seek them out.
The dry season has a lot to offer; this is when waves like Mawi and Dessert Point work best. These spots are blessed with offshore winds and a bigger swell in the dry season, which will deliver some nice hollow barrels.
If you aren’t looking for barrels, you can surf the more protected spots in Ekas, Gerupuk, and Tanjung Aan on the less windy days.
Learning to surf
There are many surf camps and surf teachers around Kuta and the wider area, and the team at Villa Amani will happily arrange for you to connect with a variety of operators and make your choice. Usually everything you need is included in the fee, such as board rental, transport, and any additional fees.
